Social media has become an inevitable part of most people’s personal and professional lives, using multiple platforms to communicate and share information. However, people should be cautious about what they post and share on social media. Comments or posts that are seen as inflammatory, offensive, or discriminatory can reflect badly on the company they are employed at.
Can a social media post get me fired?
If what you posted are severe and can possibly damage the company’s reputation, you may want to prepare yourself for what is to come.
As an employee, you are seen as an extension of the company and whether you are in the office or at home, your actions represent the company. When it comes to racist, sexist, and homophobic comments or posts, most companies have a zero-tolerance policy. Any offensive or inappropriate actions on social media could lead to a disciplinary action.
An employee’s conduct, whether outside the workplace, online or offline, can have a negative impact on the workplace. In cases where a person started or got involved in inappropriate social media comments, the person’s place of work was identified, and pressure was placed on the company to dismiss the individual.
Where a client of the company becomes involved and their impression of the company is changed, the code of conduct will apply, and the employer must enforce their rules. Employees must be cautious what they post about co-workers, bosses, and the company itself on social media. People should see their work relationship like any other relationship that is based on trust and respect. It is a good idea to avoid work gossip on social media.
What about Freedom of Speech?
All South African citizens have the freedom of speech. However, hate speech, such as offensive or discriminatory comments founded on someone’s ethnicity, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation is not covered by Freedom of Speech.
It is necessary for companies to be clear about their social media policies to their employees. They must communicate to their employees all the do’s and don’ts. However, even if the company is not clear about its policies, it can take disciplinary steps if an employee breaches the social media policy. It is the employee’s responsibility to keep out of trouble and not bring any bad publicity on the company.
